Jesus shows us the importance of Christian Baptism. Before starting his public ministry, Jesus submitted himself to the baptism given by John the Baptist.
Saint Ambrose said, “Our Lord was baptized because He wished, not to be cleansed, but to cleanse the waters.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains Baptism this way: “Baptism is the first and chief sacrament of forgiveness of sins because it unites us with Christ, who died for our sins and rose for our justification, so that we too might walk in newness of life.” (CCC 977)
Through original sin we’re born deprived of spiritual life. Through Baptism, God removes the stain of original sin allowing us to participate in his life in Jesus Christ and makes us his children. It marks us with an indelible spiritual mark of belonging to Christ. It is through this sacrament that we receive the Holy Spirit and become members of the People of God, of the Body of Christ, which is the Church. Baptism becomes our commitment to grow in this new life and to strive to acquire spiritual maturity. By baptism, God purifies us from sin.
